So my new series is depicting various fairytales, legends, and Myths ranging from Thumbelina to Sleeping Beauty to Herclues the way they are written originally. I will use the character versions which have been made famous by Disney and eg. Bluth, but put the characters in the situtations described in their fairytales. I will also try to stay more true to how people would dress during the time the fairytale took place.
The Little Mermaid by HC Andersen 1837
In the original tale the little mermaid turns to sea foam, and later a spirit of the air, at the end of the story, because she doesn't kill the prince, which she must to become a mermaid again. It's either become mermaid or sea foam.
I changed her dress so it would be slightly more historically accurate and her hair is inspired my The Little Mermaid Statue in Denmark.
Changed: In the story this scene takes place during dawn, and the little mermaid throws herself from the ship, instead of slowly dissolving. I also made the little mermaid a little older in this picture than in the fairytale, where she is 15.
I have always loved your work and this piece is no different. The changes you made fit the story better than the original ending. You gave just enough detail to the backround to make this piece really come to life. The way Ariel is holding her shoe while she turns to sea foam is a great symbol as her few days as a human; like she is holding on to those memories while she can. I think Hans would have loved to have this as the ending picture for his story. Don't ever stop reaching for your brush and canvas
I always felt you where a wonderful artist but this is absolutely beautiful. I love the way he feet began to disappear in the water as she watches the boat float away, You can see around her as she turns into sea form. The reflection work is flawless. The detail of the boat from a distant is intricate, almost like you spent a lot of time on it without sacrificing the rest of the painting. Your attention to color and detail in terms of the sunset and the colors it emits is beautiful. a very well done piece of art.
